MetroPCS Proposes Merger With Leap Wireless

MetroPCS today announced that it had proposed a merger with Leap Wireless, aiming to create what it says would be the fifth major cellular provider in the US after AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. The “merger” would include a stock deal where each share in Leap would be swapped for 2.75 shares of MetroPCS worth roughly $5 billion. Let’s be clear, however. MetroPCS is proposing that it would retain majority ownership at 65% of the new company. One only has to look back at a few recent similarly structured “mergers” to understand that the executives from Leap would not necessarily have equal say in the deal.

Apple IPhone Unlocked

A group called Iphone Sim Free has announced on their website that they have achieved a full software unlock for the popular Apple iPhone. This means that the iPhone can now be used on T-Mobile's network in addition to just AT&T's. We reported in July that you could mod your iPhone to use prepaid SIM cards from AT&T, but this new software unlock will allow you to use any SIM card from any network with the iPhone.

AT&T No Longer Claims to Have the "Fewest Dropped Calls"

Following numerous investigations, studies, and even lawsuits, AT&T has decided to stop using the slogan "Fewest Dropped Calls". AT&T started using the claim based on a report by Telephia, even though the report didn't explicitly state that they were the most reliable. The report even said that AT&T did not have the fewest dropped calls in many areas such as New York, Chicago, Houston and Los Angeles.

Virgin Mobile Ranks Highest in JD Power Survey

Customer satisfaction with prepaid service has risen across the board according to the latest JD Powers survey. The area that saw the biggest increase this year was the "cost of service category". Users are finding the cost of prepaid phones to be more and more attractive. Out of all the providers involved, Virgin Mobile ended up on top, especially in areas of cost of service, account management, initial activation and service plan options.

Nokia Battery Recall

Nokia announced today that it is going to be recalling 46 million of its batteries because there is a risk that they could overheat and dislodge from the phone. The overheating is said to occur during charging by a short circuit inside the battery. One model being recalled that is of particular interest to prepaid users is the Nokia 6030, which is very popular among prepaid consumers.

Cricket expands in Colorado, plans to enter new markets

Cricket, part of Leap Wireless International, has doubled its workforce in Denver, Colorado to 200 employees. The company has also placed one of its top executives, Al Moschner, in the Denver office. Cricket hopes that creating the business hub in Colorado will help them expand to other markets such as Chicago, Las Vegas, and Minneapolis.

Amp'd Mobile suspending service on July 24th, port your number now

The struggling Amp'd mobile has reported on its website that it will be suspending cell phone service on July 24th. Amp'd filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month, but on July 20th they requested they be able to sell their assets at an auction. They reportedly sent a text message to their customers over the weekend to tell them the bad news.

The Apple iPhone was released last month with much hype and critical acclaim. The iPhone is a phone, iPod, and wireless web browser all wrapped in to one sleek package. For all its perks though, the iPhone came with one very limiting restriction: in order to use it you had to enter into an expensive service contract with Cingular Wireless. All that changed recently though when a tool called iASign was released that allows iPhone owners to use any Cingular or AT&T SIM card, including prepaid ones, with their device.
